Melrose Place - Sudsy 90's Soap On-The-Way To DVD!

Courtney Thorne-Smith as "Alison". Andrew Shue as "Billy". Thomas Calabro as "Michael". Josie Bissett as "Jane". Doug Savant as "Matt". Grant Show as "Jake". Heather Locklear as "Amanda". Marcia Cross as "Kimberly". Laura Leighton as "Sydney". The place must be...Melrose Place

Those are just some of the names among the great cast of Fox Network's hot soap of the 90's, and fans have been waiting to get DVDs of this since TV-on-DVD took off. Now, it looks like their wish is Paramount's command!

Yesterday's edition of The Wall Street Journal (2/23/05, Section B) had a story by Merissa Marr and Joe Flint entitled "DVDs Are Finally Paramount". The article explains that previous management figures had a strategy of bringing titles - film and TV based - to DVD in a slow and steady fashion, and that new management in place now has a different plan of increasing the studio's revenue by way of cutting loose on the library.

Much of this has been reported already, at the time that the executives did their shuffle in recent months, and it wasn't exactly news we could use here at TVShowsOnDVD because no actual titles were brought up. But the Wall Street Journal story is naming names!

Mentioned in the story are a number of shows that Paramount intends to release in the near future, in order to drive their profits and therefore the stock value at parent Viacom. Melrose Place is mentioned as being among the titles they are planning to release, albeit later than some of the others talked aout in the story.

Nothing along the lines of a timeline was given, though, nor any other details. We're just happy here to know it's in the works...I was addicted to that show when it first aired, and I'll be grateful to finally get it on DVD. We know you'll be, too. Stay tuned for more!

Melrose Place - This Is The Place: Paramount Announces November Release Of 1st Season!

For a year-and-a-half, we've known it was coming. When Paramount teased us earlier this year with indications that it was coming, TVShowsOnDVD began asking them on a pretty-much weekly basis what the street date was. We last asked the studio about this last Monday (the 17th), and were told that there still wasn't a US date for the show. But now, Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed:

Melrose Place -
The Complete 1st Season

NOVEMBER 7th

Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives), Doug Savant (Desperate Housewives), Courtney Thorne-Smith (According To Jim), Daphne Zuniga (Beautiful People), Grant Show (Beautiful People), Andrew Shue (2007 film Gracie), Thomas Calabro (upcoming 2006 film Cake), Amy Locane (Throttle), Josie Bissett (TV film I Do, They Don't) and Vanessa Williams (upcoming 2006 TV film Contradictions of the Heart) are all in the cast right from the start of the first season of this classic primetime soap, which was a Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off.

Two very popular and memorable characters from the show, Heather Locklear's "Amanda" and Laura Leighton's "Sydney", show up in the 1st season of Melrose Place, but not until the 21st and 19th episodes, respectively. Also, some of the 90210 cast show up in the first few episodes, in a cross-over with the series they are spinning off: look for Jennie Garth ("Kelly"), Brian Austin Green ("David"), Ian Ziering ("Steve") and Tori Spelling ("Donna")! you'll also spot a number of other celebrities in these 32 episodes (was it really that many? wow!), such as Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Nestor Carbonell (The Tick), Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Liz Sheridan (ALF; Seinfeld), Rae Dawn Chong (Commando), Ben Stein (Win Ben Stein's Money), Rob Estes (Suddenly Susan; I Do, They Don't), Michelle Johnson (Blame It On Rio), and Vanessa Angel (TV's Weird Science).

Melrose Place - The Complete 1st Season will be an 8-DVD set that runs 25 hours and 10 minutes. Please stand by for extras (if any) and box art! Beverly Hills, 90210 - The Complete 1st Season has been announced for the same release date of November 7th, and we've heard that the long-awaited Twin Peaks - Season 2 will hit US shores a couple of weeks after that.

Melrose Place - Retailer Reveals A First Look At Melrose Place DVD Extras!

Information about the first season of Melrose Placeis coming out very slowly. The most recent piece of information comes from Amazon.com, not the studio. They've updated their preorder listing to include the special features:

* Mini featurettes
* Season 1 episode recaps

So fears of this being a bare-bones release should be put to rest, and hey, maybe those aren't all the bonus features we'll see on the set. The studio appears to be bundling the first seasons of Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210 together in a set called "The Good, the Bad & the Beautiful Pack." Amazon is selling this for $89.00, which is more than buying the sets individually; $36.99 for Melrose Place and $35.87 for 90210. We'll do some digging around to find out if there's anything different with this set - it contains 14 discs, which is the same as buying the two sets together (8 for Melrose and 6 for 90210).

Melrose Place - Melrose Music Substitution Mentioned

Jessica Wolf is reporting at the trade mag Home Media Retailing that the upcoming November 7th DVD release of Melrose Place - The Complete 1st Season, along with the show it spun off from, Beverly Hills 90210, will each incur some music replacement:

Fans of the two shows, both Aaron Spelling productions, have been eager for a DVD release since the TV DVD market exploded. But both of the popular 1990s series, especially "90210" featured notable musical hits from the era, and music clearance for DVD releases for shows such as this are fraught with costly negotiations.

Like many other shows with strong pop-culture soundtracks, such as "Felicity," some music for the episodes included on these discs will be replaced with new tracks, according to a Paramount spokesperson.

That was done to prevent more delays in getting the DVD sets out, according to Paramount. The studio hired one of Spelling's former music supervisors to help substitute some music.

Unfortunate, but it's good that we know this in advance, and it's good that the studio went back to the folks who were possibly involved in the original music selection to come up with suitable substitutions. Read the HMR story for more info. Our thanks to reader "Mark" for the heads-up about that article.
