Disney Announces 'Oz the Great and Powerful 3D' Workaround

Earlier today, in response to consumer outcry, Disney revealed that Blu-ray copies of Oz the Great and Powerful 3D -- which feature a 3D BD disc and downloadable digital copy, but no 2D BD -- will include an in-package offer that allows those who purchase the 3D version to obtain a 2D BD disc by mail for an additional $5.99.

The studio's official statement reads as follows:

"We strive to give our consumers the best in-home experience and consistently evolve our mix of product offerings. We know that our 3D consumers enjoy that experience as well as the ease of use and functionality of digital copy. With Oz the Great and Powerful we're offering a single, simplified version for their in-home and on-the-go viewing needs. And, for those desiring a 2D Blu-ray version of the film, there's an offer included in the package."
Blu-ray.com has yet to receive official confirmation as to whether the $5.99 offer was created specifically to address the recent rash of complaints received from consumers, which were many, or if the offer was designed to be included in the package all along. The former would suggest Disney is in the process of quickly re-evaluating its 3D strategy going forward. The latter would suggest this is simply another aspect of the studio's 3D packaging experiment.

Oz the Great and Powerful arrives on Blu-ray on June 11th via 2D (BD + DVD + Digital Copy) and 3D (3DBD + Digital Copy) combo pack releases. Additional details for both editions are available here.

Film Synopsis: When Oscar Diggs (Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is first swept away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot, with fame and fortune his for the taking. All that begins to change, though, when he meets three witches -- Theodora (Kunis), Evanora (Weisz) and Glinda (Williams) -- who aren't convinced he's the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must uncover who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
