The Passion of the Christ
A new toned-down version of The Passion of the Christ will roll into into theaters next month. According to Daily Variety, director Mel Gibson has trimmed almost six minutes of graphic violence for this re-release, dubbed "The Passion Recut." Although it has grossed over $600 million since its debut last year, many people have still avoided the film because of its gruesome portrayal of Christ's torture at the hands of the Romans. Realizing this, the the financially shrewd Gibson has gone back into the editing room and created a new softer and gentler version, cutting away splatter-filled scenes and substituting shots in other areas. In a twist, however, the film will carry no rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Look for The Passion Recut to play on 750 screens starting on March 11th. There's no word yet if this version will be released onto DVD.
