Video:
The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen video is the best reason for buying this DVD. The picture is much better than the non-anamorphic widescreen and Pan-&-Scan options on the first DVD edition. Still, the image is not as good as one would like it to be. The video is a tad soft, and whites bloom so much that they create blurry edges. There is also some print damage that detracts from the overall quality of the presentation.

Audio:
The Dolby Digital 5.1 English audio track has several pulse-pounding moments because Danny Elfman repeatedly uses the famous music theme. For an action movie, “Mission: Impossible” is light on explosions. Its best use of sound design is during a heist sequence that takes place mostly in silence. There are some cool panning effects during the train sequence that dominates the last third of the movie.

You can also watch the movie with a DD 2.0 surround English track or a DD 2.0 surround French dub.

Optional English and Spanish subtitles as well as optional English closed captions support the audio.


Note:
Paramount’s first DVD release of “Mission: Impossible” had non-anamorphic widescreen and Pan-&-Scan video options, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, and a trailer.
The “new” two-disc release of “Mission: Impossible 2” has the same disc as the first DVD release plus a disc with extras found on the new DVD release of “Mission: Impossible”. Basically, you’re not getting anything new pertaining to the second movie.
